Conqueror
Temple class 1756
Wrecked 26th October 1760
Second RN vessel with the name Conqueror
Larn 111
‘After anchoring in Plymouth Sound, the captain went ashore, after which the CONQUEROR was ordered to be taken up the Hamoaze under the guidance of a local pilot. As she was manoeuvering past St. Nicholas’ Island, s he ran onto the rocks on the south east corner of the island. Attempts to get her off proved unsuccessful and her masts were cut away in an effort to lighten and ease her. Hawsers were rigged to the i sland to prevent her falling over, but a rock had pierced the bottom and she filled with water. The crew were taken off and landed on the island, the stores removed over the next few days, before the vessel was stripped and abandoned as a wreck. The blame was placed on the ‘misconduct of the pilot.’ No evidence of ship’s timbers have been found in the area by divers, but large quantities of lead musket shot and lead sheathing have been recovered over the years.’
